Climate change and other man-made influences threaten the ecosystems of the Alps. Protected areas that play a key role in the preservation of biodiversity are particularly affected. As a network in the German-speaking Alpine region, ALPARC CENTR'ALPS e.V. is committed to networking protected areas, improving their management efficiency and promoting sustainable solutions.
The project "A strong network of alpine protected areas - cooperation and exchange of practitioners for more nature conservation and sustainable quality of life in the central Alpine region" pursues the overarching goal of preserving alpine ecosystems and curbing biodiversity loss. The aim is to strengthen the work of protected areas, intensify their cooperation and improve ecological connectivity. Through the exchange of experience and joint activities, protective measures can be made more efficient and new findings can be put into practice.
The focus is on six thematic focal points:
Protected Area Management & Biodiversity Conservation – Development and implementation of concrete measures as well as coordinated biodiversity and habitat monitoring between Alpine protected areas.
Offers for visitors and outdoor sports enthusiasts – visitor management, sustainable tourism concepts and barrier-free access.
Cooperation with agriculture – alpine pasture and pasture management in the context of climate change and biodiversity loss.
Environmental Education & Public Relations – Joint educational activities, events and awareness campaigns.
Digital tools for park management – development and use of new technologies to support protected area work.
Ranger & Continuing Education Profession – Promotion of training, skills development and joint alpine actions.
The project is based on a network approach in which protected areas of different categories and other relevant actors work closely together. In order to optimize the transfer of knowledge, compact information documents are created that bundle central findings and are made available in a practical way. In addition, workshops, excursions and network meetings will take place, the results of which will be compiled in a practice-oriented guide.
The project's cross-border and integrative approach connects protected area categories, countries and actors in a biogeographically unified region. Through the close cooperation with ALPARC, Alpine-wide strategies are integrated, while ALPARC CENTR'ALPS supports practical implementation as a regional platform. This gives rise to new ideas, tests innovative solutions and efficiently disseminates findings.
